  • How often should a septic tank be emptied?

The council recommends that Septic Tanks & Treatment Plant Systems be emptied every 3 years. Treatment plant systems should also be serviced quarterly.

  • What are signs my tank needs to be emptied?

Septic leaks in the backyard, strong sewage smells, slow draining bathrooms/backflow.

  • My septic smells. Does this mean I need an empty?

Septic tanks can smell for several reasons, one is that they need to be emptied. You can try enzymes and other wives’ tales; however, if it has been more than 3 years since your last empty, the first recommendation is to get the septic emptied.

  • Can you pump the septic through the plastic inspection opening?

Short Answer: No. We do not pump septic tanks through inspection ports as it can lead to several serious and expensive complications. While an IO pump out might temporarily lower the tank's levels, it does not adequately empty it.

  • How do I find my septic tank?

You need to find a large concrete lid(s) when looking for your tank. If you cannot locate the septic, we offer a service with a qualified plumber who can attend and locate the septic tank using a drain camera. We can also provide you with a condition report and mapping of your drainage field (if applicable).

  • Do I need to be home when you pump out my septic?

It is not a requirement for you to be home. We ask that pets be contained to make the service safer and easier for everyone involved.

  • Do the lids need to be opened on the tank?

Our operators are equipped with specialist equipment to open septic tank lids. Lids can be heavy and easily broken or dropped into septic tanks. It is recommended that you let the professionals handle all septic procedures.

  • How do I pay for the service?

On your invoice, the payment details are on the bottom left corner. You can either bank transfer the funds or call the office to pay by EFTPOS. Please get in touch with us if these options do not suit you.

  • I am worried that the truck won’t be able to fit. What size are your trucks?

Yarra Valley Septics and our sister company have over 22 trucks, ranging from underground car park clearance trucks to large semi-trucks. We mostly send out our 12,000L rigids for septic works and can get these into most properties. If there is an access issue with access to your property, just let us know on the phone, and we will work with you to get the job done!

  • What should I expect after desludging of my systems?

It usually takes up to three months for the system to re-establish the good bacteria and start producing clean odourless effluent. During this period, you may experience:

    1. Strong odours, especially during peak times such as showers and after loads of washing, etc
    2. Poor quality of treated effluent
    3. Service reports stating system poor performance
  • What important things do I need to do after a desludge?

    1. Avoid or reduce any harsh chemicals being poured down the drain
    2. Conserve water usage
    3. Prevent oils and grease from entering your system. Put them in the rubbish bin instead.
    4. Refill the system with water immediately. The water helps to give your system a head-start by diluting the wastewater that enters your system. Refilling with water will also ensure there is sufficient weight in the system to prevent the unlikely, but possible, situation of your tank/s lifting out of the ground, due to buoyancy from groundwater pressure. This is especially the case during wet weather or in high-water table areas, and especially for plastic tank systems. Be careful to closely monitor whilst refilling the system, don’t forget to turn off the tap. You can refill the system by putting hose through the septic access lid or down the ORG (100mm black grate on the outside of your house)

Please note: Strong medications can also affect the re-establishment of good bacteria in your septic system. Contact YVS if you would like more information about this.

  • Why would I refill my tank after it's been emptied?

    1.     Protecting the Tank’s Structure – An empty tank is at risk of being crushed by the surrounding soil due to external pressure. Filling it with water balances the pressure inside and out, preventing structural damage.

    2.     Keeping the Tank in Place – An empty tank can float or shift, potentially damaging pipes and connections. Adding water ensures the tank stays securely in position.

    3.     Starting the Treatment Process – Water helps activate the natural bacteria inside the tank, which are essential for breaking down waste effectively.

    4.     Ensuring Proper Waste Breakdown – When wastewater enters the tank, it mixes with the existing water, diluting the waste and creating a balanced environment for bacteria to function properly.
